3-day 'Stoked on the Southern Cape'

Surf Road Trip

This epic 3-day surf road trip adventure offers you the unique opportunity to learn how to surf or improve your surfing whilst exploring some of the best-kept secrets of the Southern Cape. We follow the beautiful coastline from Cape Town to our surf camp accommodation in the picturesque beachside village of Arniston. En route we stop off to surf at one of the many beaches along the way. Daily progressive surf lessons are combined with activities including visiting the Southernmost Tip of Africa, whale spotting in Hermanus, sandboarding at sunset and hiking along sand dunes to hidden seas caves. Join us on this experience of a lifetime!

Based in the seaside village of Arniston, this surf camp lodging is only foot steps from the beach we surf at. Arniston is only 2.5 hours drive from Cape Town (however since we road trip up there on day 1, surfing along the way and stopping off for lunch and photo stops, it takes us a full day to get there). The village is nestled between sand dunes and farm land with the warmer azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean lapping on it's shores. The surf here is great for beginner to intermediate surfers year round and during the Winter months can also be enjoyed by more experienced surfers too.

The lodging we stay at is a cosy beach house designed for surfers. It has two rooms with dormitary-style beds, one double room, a fantastic outside barbeque area (where we spend most of our evenings), a fully equipped kitchen where we'll prepare hearty meals for the hungry surfers, a sunny chill out lounge with fire place for the colder months, an outdoor shower and indoor shower facilities.

  • 2 nights accommodation in Arniston beach house
  • 3 x 2 hour surf lessons
  • use of all surfing equipment
  • surfing photographs (snapshots taken by coaches during the lesson) uploaded to the web
  • return transportation from Cape Town city pick up points
  • all meals from dinner on day #1 up to and including lunch on day #3
  • all listed activities, including sand boarding

It does NOT include:

  • PRE- and POST-camp accommodation (ie the night prior to departure from Cape Town and the night of day #3 when we return to Cape Town). These can be arranged if needed at an additional cost.
  • airport transfers (can be arranged at additional cost)
  • lunch on day #1
  • soft drinks, bottled water, snacks or alcohol
  • any items of personal nature

We will collect you from one of our designated city pick up points at 8:15-8:45am on day 1 and cruise along the coast in our comfortable, spacious van. The coach is your driver too for the weekend and will keep you entertained with surfing stories, information on the local area and some epic road trip tunes of course! On day 3, we will drop you off (at the same pick up point) at approximately 6:30-7pm after a full long weekend of sun, surf and fun.

We provide you with a wetsuit and surfboard to use for the duration of the camp. For those who have never surfed or who have only surfed a handful of times, we use our beginner specific soft boards making it easy to catch waves and stand up. For those who have surfed before and have an understanding of how to catch waves and handle a board in crowded conditions, we offer regular epoxy or fibreglass boards.

We use 4:3mm wetsuits that are well maintained and are sure to keep you warm for the duration of each 2-hour session. In the Summer months, we are sometimes able to surf without wetsuits at this location due to the Indian Ocean temperatures rising and you can therefore make use of our surf school rash vests for sun protection.

Day 1: Friday

We pick up from our city pick up points 8:15-8:45am before heading out of Cape Town and following the beautiful coastal drive to Hermanus. We will stop at one of the many beaches en route for our first surf lesson where you will learn the basics of surfing. We will enjoy lunch in Hermanus before continuing our journey through the canola fields to our lodging in the seaside village of Arniston.  That evening we enjoy a delicious home cooked dinner together.

Day 2: Saturday

After breakfast, we grab our boards and stroll down to the beach for the second surf lesson. During this lesson you will consolidate the skills you have learnt on day 1 and should feel far more comfortable in the surf. After a wholesome lunch, we then head off along dusty back roads to the Southernmost Tip of Africa (the official meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans) and nearby shipwreck which offers some great photo opportunities. We then return to our lodging via local farm roads where there is the opportunity to spot some ostriches and zebra along with some amazing bird life. Upon arrival at our accommodation, we grab our sand boards and head for the nearby sand dunes to ‘surf’ the sand whilst watching the sunset. That evening we share our stories around the fire and enjoy a South African braai (barbeque).

Day 3: Sunday

After a quick breakfast we walk down for the third surf lesson where you'll learn how to make directional changes on your board. We will then take a nature hike along the dunes to an impressive sea cave for which the area is famous. During the Summer months there is an opportunity to swim in the many rock pools en route. After lunch, we will then head back to the city via Sir Lowry’s Pass offering sweeping views across the Cape Town metropolitan area. We will be back in Cape Town by early evening to drop off at our city pick up points.

Please note: The order of itinerary may be altered to suit prevailing surf conditions inorder to ensure you have the best surf camp experience possible.
